How to Tell a Good Massage Shop in Ao Nang From a Bad One

Ao Nang Beach Road has more massage shops than restaurants, almost all advertising similar treatments at similar prices. Visitors usually choose on whichever doorway they happen to pass. There are better signals than that, and most of them take ten seconds to check.

The price list should be outside and complete

A full printed menu facing the street, with every treatment and every duration, is the simplest honest signal there is. A shop confident in its prices puts them where you can read them without going in.

Be wary of a board showing only the cheapest item, or one where the 60-minute price is large and the rest is small. The gap between the advertised number and the number at the end is where unhappy reviews come from.

Ask what happens if you want to change treatment

A good shop will swap a treatment or shorten a session without drama. A shop that cannot is either badly run or working on a commission structure that makes your preference inconvenient.

Ask before you commit, not after you have changed clothes.

Look at the therapists, not the decor

Interiors in Ao Nang are mostly the same handful of templates. What differs is whether the therapists look rushed. If the same person is finishing one guest and starting the next with no gap, the hour you get will be a tired one.

Thai massage therapists are licensed after a certified course. It is a reasonable thing to ask about and no good shop is offended by the question.

Pressure, tipping and the quiet upsell

Tipping is normal and voluntary; 50 to 100 baht for an hour you enjoyed. A shop that states a tip amount, adds it to the bill, or has the therapist ask for it, has crossed a line.

The same goes for being sold a longer session, a scrub or a package while face down on the bed. Anything you are asked to decide mid-treatment is a decision made in the worst possible conditions.

Booking beats walking in, even next door

Walk-in is fine in the morning. From four in the afternoon in high season the good shops are full, which is how people end up in the ones that are not full for a reason.

Anywhere worth going will hold a time for you with an hour of notice, and it costs nothing. At Sea Breeze you can book online, and no payment is taken up front — we only ask that you arrive five minutes before your time.
