Thai Massage in Ao Nang: A First-Timer's Guide

If you have just arrived in Ao Nang and keep walking past massage shops wondering what actually happens inside, this guide is for you. Traditional Thai massage is not the oil-and-soft-music experience most visitors expect, and knowing that in advance makes the first visit far more enjoyable.

It is closer to assisted stretching than to a rub

Traditional Thai massage uses no oil. You stay fully clothed while the therapist uses palms, thumbs, forearms, elbows and sometimes feet to press along energy lines, then guides your body through a series of slow stretches.

People often describe it as "being put through yoga by someone else". The pressure is firm and rhythmic rather than gentle, and the stretching is what leaves you feeling loose for days afterwards.

What to wear and what happens when you arrive

The shop provides loose cotton clothing and you change before the session. Wear whatever is comfortable to arrive in; you will not be in it during the massage.

Your feet are washed first. This is standard in every reputable shop in Thailand and takes a couple of minutes. You will then lie on a floor mattress or a low bed, and the therapist will start at the feet and work upward.

Tell them your pressure preference before you start

Thai therapists are trained to work deep. If you prefer lighter work, say so at the beginning rather than enduring it politely. "Bao bao" means light, "nak nak" means strong. Saying either mid-session is completely normal and nobody will be offended.

Tell the therapist about injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy or high blood pressure before you begin. Some stretches are avoided in those cases.

How long and how much

Sixty minutes is the standard first session and is enough to cover the whole body. Ninety or 120 minutes allows slower, deeper work, but start with 60 if you are unsure.

In Ao Nang a 60-minute traditional Thai massage typically costs around 350 baht. Oil treatments run a little higher because of the products used. Tipping is not required but is appreciated; 50 to 100 baht is common if you enjoyed the session.

After your massage

Drink water, and do not plan anything strenuous for an hour or two. Mild soreness the next day is normal, particularly if it was your first session; it usually means tight areas were worked on rather than that anything went wrong.
